I've been a huge fan of Doom (and especially Doom 2) for many years now- they were the games that got me into PC gaming. I recently purchased the 'Doom Classic Complete' bundle on Steam that comes with Doom, Doom 2, Final Doom, and Master Levels (if anyone knows how to get novert working with Master Levels, that would be so awesome).Final Doom and Master Levels in particular have reawakened my need for fresh Doom experiences, so I'm coming to to see if Heretic/Hexen/Strife will scratch that itch. Would you guys recommend these games? What are some things I should be aware of going into them? How similar/different are they to the Doom series? As far as I can tell, you can only get Heretic, the Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders expansion, Hexen, and Hexen II on Steam. Should I get Heretic II and Strife as well?
Strife in particular seems really interesting to me, since I enjoy RPGs, but will it be a disappointment?I'm really just fishing for 's opinions on these games. What do you think of them, and would you recommend them to someone who's never played them before, but loves Doom?. I've never played Strife, but Heretic and Hexen plus their expansions/sequels are fantastic. Some Doom fans don't like them, and I've yet to hear good reasons why.Doom pretty much changed my entire world of gaming when it first came out. If you love Doom and all the expansions + sequel, you should love these games. The only real differences in gameplay are the ability to look up and down, jump, and in Hexen's case, you can shatter windows and shit. Hexen 2 had some other modifications, including an obvious graphic upgrade, giving it that late 90s FPS feel we all miss (I DO ANYWAY).
There's a slight modification to how you handle items you find (for instance, saving items in your inventory instead of automatically using them when you pick them up). In Hexen you pick a class to play as, each of which will have a little different experience through the game, with different weapons, different dexterity, magic, strength, etc. Different player classes can also use certain items differently. But more or less the games feel exactly like Doom. They use the same engine, after all. But even the gameplay is largely the same (explore awesomely designed levels to look for keys to unlock doors to get to new areas, and attack badass enemies with badass weapons). Hexen (and maybe Heretic, I don't remember) has a hub level design, which is pretty neat.
Doom didn't have that. But the way you fight and face down your enthralling adventure of exploration, danger, violence, and speed is largely similar to Doom, but with a dark fantasy medieval theme supplanting the horror sci-fi theme, which in my opinion, is done just as well, just as effectively. Oh, there's also a lot more focus on melee in these games. Doom only had fists and a chainsaw, but Heretic and Hexen both have an assortment of melee weapons. But also magic and spells, magical ranged weapons, other neat stuff. Strife did a lot of cool things with the doom engine. The entire thing is open world, has quests and full voiced NPCs, and the things you do have consquences. It's probably worth a try.You should probably look into Doom megawads as well, there is some really amazing community stuff available, such as Scythe2 or Whispers of Satan. Also, if you have a copy of Doom 3 BFG, it comes with the originally XBLA exclusive No Rest for the Living episode, developped by Nerve.
It is rather amazing, honestly. Totally worth a play.If you don't mind venturing outside the doom engine, Duke Nukem 3D and other build engine games are fairly great. Blood is a favorite of mine and runs very well in dosbox. I love Strife. What feels like many eons ago my father and I sat down in front of the family computer to play the demo for this new game called Strife. I can't remember if we got it on a CD of demos (those were totally a thing back then) or spent a few hours waiting for the download to finish, but whatever the case, we'd seen screenshots and thought the game looked interesting.Anyway, we finally booted the game up and were met with a crazy interesting story and narration, and once we got into the game an intriguing village. Well, actually, at first we had no idea what the controls were. The arrow buttons seemed to move around but we didn't immediately know how to do anything else.
In retrospect I wonder why we had trouble, since we'd played Doom prior to this.Long story short we eventually figured it out and I seriously played through that demo multiple times.Years later I finally found a copy of the game and, now realizing it to be a Doom-engine game, I played it in zDoom for the modern updates. After playing through a very enjoyable portion of the game, much further than the demo, but eventually reached a part where I just could not figure out how to progress. After trying everything I could think of I finally turned to the Internet to figure out what to do before finally discovering that for whatever reason, zDoom didn't run that part of the game correctly, so I couldn't progress. This may have been fixed since then, but at the time I was SOL.In short, I think Strife is an amazing game. It felt ahead of its time to me as young child, and was still fun to return to many years later. It's not exactly like Doom, what with a story and RPG elements and a town and friendly (and not so friendly but not just enemy monster) NPCs. The shooting and action, though, is still the Doom engine, so it's still pretty legit.

I've never finished it though because of that stupid issue with the engine I was using. (I think I cheated past that point, but I never did things legitimately). So take my advice, get Strife, but maybe make sure whatever engine you run it on will be able to finish the game. Since no one here has mentioned Heretic II yet, I shall take on the challenge. The first thing to note is that unlike all of the other games mentioned in this thread, Heretic II is a third person shooter game. If that bothers you, its going to be a problem. Its based on the Quake 2 engine, and its visual aesthetic will feel very familiar. When it came out 15 or so years ago it was absolutely fantastic.
The mouse aim controls made third person control so much more free then the Tomb Raider or Resident evils OF THE TIME. The action and level design is pure Doom-style fun.
Get the key to open the door, switch weapons as you get low on ammo, Strafe like mad, etc. It was one of my favorite games in my younger years, and I remember it fondly. I should also mention the music is phenominal. Now, with all of that said, its important to note two very important things.1.) The game has trouble running on modern OS's. There are guides to getting it to run on Modern Windows machines, but expect it to still crash. A Lot.2.) This game has not aged well, in really any respect. I just played through it about 6 months ago, and all I have to say is that the controls, once revolutionary, are now actually very frustrating and twitchy. The camera is more of a problem then it should be, your character moves to much for instantaneous button taps, and the Crosshair on the screen isn't quite as accurate as it should be.i'm not telling you what to do, but that should atleast prepare you for the experience.
Heretic: while not my favouite the 1st 2 episodes are decent enough but i feel its a bit weak, i played through it all, and near the end, it got pretty boring. Don't get me wrong its fun and all, but it starts to fade after a while at least for me.Hexen: this game will make you look up a wiki, otherwise you will run in a circle, i pretty much don't play it, because it to confusion.Strife: play it. This is a game i keep coming back to it.
The game is abandonware ware meaning it is free, so you can pick it up and download it, if you do however use on of the doom ports, i recommend zandronum or zdoom to run it. Sure some of the dungeons/levels can get a bit confusing, you will found your way around, while most of the guns may feel a bit bad, and you may just end up using the machine gun, but i had no problem with it until i finish the game and started to think how much i use that one weapon, i honestly feel strife was WAYY ahead of it timed and more people should play it.
Pm me if you want help getting it running.Chex: no seriously. Chex quest is another one, if you do play it, its kind of decent, it may scratch that itch for you. As it is basicly doom child version. And a pretty good clone too.Doom: doom has a lot of mods. Get zdoom or zandronum, and go to this link below and download some maps and mods. Some may be a bit bad, and some are okay and some are great. Point is, there is a lot of them.
If you are looking for something to scratch that itch and its the fact you know the levels to well, this is the best remedy. i hope this help you, and anyone else. I absolutely loved heretic.
Hexen was good, but somehow it lacked the kick of heretic. I remember episode 2, being in the sewers and shit, how cool all the textures were.PS i was late to the doom/quake era due to my later birth, so i have been spending the last 6-7 years playing shit like skulltag and all the old quakes. Currently playing through hexendd.wad, then i plan on playing hexen 2. I also own the bfg edition of doom 3, and i ripped the 'new' episode from doom2 off of there (called nerve.wad). Anyways, if someone wants to play hexen 2 with me when i get there, shoot me an email. I am currently in college and have a very odd schedule, but if someone (me or you, whoever you are) wants to host a server, i would love to play hexen 2 front to back with someone.
I usually play as cleric, as that's what i've done so far in both hexen games i've played. I actually ahve only played hexen as cleric, so i don't really know.
I know the fighter is primarily melee, but has ranged attacks as well. From what i know the fighter has the hardest hitting weapons. The cleric is a balance, i really like the dragon staff or whatever the thing is that shoots the two green projectiles that serpentine, as well as the super weapon for the cleric summmons demons that carry off enemies and do naughty things to them. I know nothing about the mage, although i think it is entirely range weapons. Hexen and heretic are both fantastic games! If you play hexen don't feel ashamed to have to look up the FAQ.
There will be times you get stuck and go around in circles. Gameplay wise hexen looks and plays a little better then heretic and it think it's more interesting. But just to warn you on newer computers the game may requre fixes. I got hexen working with a little tweaking but for some reason heretic is just unplayable. It moves at 2 frames per second and I couldn't fix it. And this was on windows 8.1.
Hexen: Beyond Heretic is the second in the Serpent Riders Trilogy, succeeding. Hexen: Beyond Heretic game descriptionHexen is the sequel to.
While the Heretic was destroying D’Sparil, the other two Serpent Riders have come to your dimension and slaughtered everyone. Or so they thought. Three humans have managed to escape with their lives and now seek vengeance against the Serpent Rider Korax who remains in their world.Like Heretic, Hexen is a fantasy game based on an enhanced. All of Heretic‘s innovations like vertical looking, flying, and the inventory system have been carried over. The new major changes this time around are three characters for the player to choose from and the level hub system. The characters are the Fighter, the Cleric, and the Mage. Each one has four unique weapons and different levels of speed and armor. Are you strong enough to face your own masters? The hub system steps away from the traditional “single levels stringed along into episodes” system which had been carried over into the FPS genre from sidescrollers and made popular.
In Hexen‘s hub system each episode is still made up of interconnected levels, but most of the levels are connected to a single “hub” level through portals. There are also portals between some of the “spoke” levels. Many of the puzzles in Hexen require travel back and forth between different levels.Other innovations in Hexen included weather effects, jumping, earth-quakes, and destructible objects such as trees and vases.
